Since 2004, the 2nd Street Garden has been a labor of love for the neightbors. Formerly named the “Friends of Second Street” garden, the design, original plantings and maintenance were funded through generous gifts. In 2019, the neighbors realized that the time had come to revive and reorganize the ongoing care of this garden sandwiched in between two sets of steps.

Under the stewardship of Sausalito Beautiful’s Neighborhood Projects, they organized support and donations for the charming 2nd Street Garden. Sausalito Beautiful is committed to addressing long-deferred care and maintenance of all of Sausalito’s public green spaces.  The larger spaces like Dunphy Park, which are heavily utilized by all Sausalitans, receive weekly attention from the City of Sausalito’s landscaping crew. Smaller spaces like the 2nd Street Garden that tucked away in neighborhoods may not receive as much attention as neighbors might like, which is where Sausalito Beautiful comes in.  We work with a neighborhood leader to organize, raise money, and improve the smaller public green spaces around town.

In that spirit, Sausalito Beautiful committed to one year of support of the 2nd Street Garden, the effort being lead by Rebecca L. We offered to contribute $600 if she raised $1400 through neighborhood donations, to help encourage our adoption of this garden. After the first year, we hope that the project will be self-funded through a regular donation program (via Sausalito Beautiful).The 2nd street neighbors have achieved much since launching their Neighborhood Project in 2019:

• Created a plan for the garden
• Raised $2,000 for 2x year professional garden pruning
• Sourced a professional gardener, whose team has pruned and fertilized
• Lobbied the City arborist to treat their oak tree with an organic treatment to combat ‘Ehrhorn’s oak scale
• Organized several neighborhood garden meetups to weed and trim
• Fixed the irrigation system

The time has come for another fundraising effort to support the ongoing maintenance of the beautiful 2nd Street Garden. The $2,000 raised in 2019 has been spent on professional gardening maintenance and it’s time to replenish our funds. Our goal is to raise $2,500 by April 22, 2022.

Neighbors interested in volunteering their garden skills to this garden are asked to provide their contact information for the purpose of organizing biannual meetups throughout the year to supplement professional gardening services.
