Thank you to all who helped plant over 1,000 daffodils and native bulbs at Dunphy Park and the Bayside MLK Schools. This annual community planting event was a fun outdoor activity on a sunny day in December 2021. We planted two types of yellow and white daffodils, Golden Echo and Pueblo, which we also planted last year. New this year, we planted two purple native bulbs: Brodiaea laxa and Camassia quamash. Interestingly, Camassia bulbs were historically roasted and eaten by native peoples (similar in taste to a sweet potato).
Over two dozen people volunteered to plant at Dunphy Park and the Nevada Street campus of Bayside MLK Academy, which were augmented by additional bulbs planted by teacher Kelly Browning’s 2nd grade students. At the Phillips Street campus, the 7th and 8th grade students planted bulbs as part of a science experiment lead by their teacher Nathan Scripps (who is a Sausalito Beautiful board member). The next generation of environmental stewards is becoming inspired to care about public green spaces!
A big thank you goes out to all volunteers and students. You will brighten everyone’s spirits with this small yet powerful act—and perhaps even learn a little something!
