After the renovation of MLK Park, Sausalito Beautiful spearheaded the planting of over 150 trees and shrubs to replace and augment the trees that were removed. We’ve been monitoring the health of the trees, and wanted to give you an update on this impactful project.

Due to the attention of the Sausalito’s Landscape Crew, Sausalito Beautiful’s Green Thumbs team, and Bartlett Tree Experts, the trees at MLK look very healthy! Upon initial planting, we lost a small number of trees due to poor soils on the slope, but the vast majority are doing very well. The 40 trees on the interior of the walking path are surprisingly vigorous given that they were just planted in February of last year. In the past few weeks, Bartlett fertilized all the trees and did some important early structural pruning which will reinforce the best growth habit for the coming years.

A permanent plaque commemorating the tree donors was recently installed at the park. The plaque, which is inset in a large rock, was designed and paid for by Sausalito Beautiful, then installed by the City’s Landscape crew. While the plaque celebrates all the donors, we want to especially give a big shout out to Terry Causey and his family for their generous contributions.

As the weather warms, please stroll through the park to admire the trees, and be sure to check out the plaque! You will find it at the base of the Ulmus Parvifolia (Chinese Elm) on the west side of the park where the path from the parking lot meets the walking path encircling the playing fields.
