SUMMARY:Preparing Marin’s native plant population for Sea Level Rise
DESCRIPTION:In Marin County’s tidal marshes and shorelines\, most of the native plant species diversity is narrowly distributed along the highest edges. The San Francisco Estuary’s plant diversity survived over 10\,000 years of extreme\, punctuated changes in sea level rise and climate. The legacy of these remarkably resilient tidal marsh plant species is threatened by a new climate phase of abrupt rapid sea level rise and hotter\, more arid climate with more extreme weather events.  Coastal ecologist and botanist Peter Baye will explore unprecedented challenges and opportunities for adapting Marin’s tidal shores to conserve the local legacy of native plant diversity. Registration and more information on this California Native Plant Society webinar.

SUMMARY:Celebrate Earth Day
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate Earth Day by joining Sausalito Beautiful at MLK Park on Saturday April 24!  We’ll be doing some planting along with weeding to support the 100+ trees and shrubs we planted in the fall of 2019. Don your garden gloves and do a little work out in the fresh air (socially-distanced) along with your family\, friends\, and neighbors. \n\n\n\nThis event is part of our Green Thumbs program\, which encourages citizen volunteers to roll up their sleeves and help Sausalito’s public green spaces look their best. Although we usually meet once a month\, we’ve been hampered recently by Covid.  But MLK Park allows for plenty of distance between family groups. \n\n\n\nWe’ll meet at 9:30am by the Exercise Equipment Circle (MLK Park\, 610 Coloma Street)\, divide up our duties\, work for a couple hours\, and then have a brown bag picnic afterwards.  Bring your mask\, water bottle\, and lunch. If you have garden gloves and weeding equipment bring those also\, although we can provide some. Please RSVP or send questions to Scriba whose email is GreenThumbs@sausalitobeautiful.org.  Hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:California’s Magnificent Oaks and Their Many Relations
DESCRIPTION:California’s iconic and magnificent oaks support a more diverse array of organisms than any other terrestrial ecosystem in the state. In a presentation filled with wood ducks\, woodrats\, woodpeckers\, and many other species\, author and naturalist Kate Marianchild will discuss the keystone role oaks play in oak woodland food webs. We’ll learn about symbiotic connections between oaks and other organisms\, such as fungi\, jays\, and caterpillars\, and we’ll marvel at the tiny wasps who bend enormous oak trees to their bidding. We will crawl with Kate through woodrat mansions\, fight for breeding opportunities with acorn woodpeckers\, and defend mistletoe with bluebirds. Who could stay away? \n\n\n\nZoom Reservations Required: Link Here \n\n\n\n\n\nKate Marianchild is the author of Secrets of the Oak Woodlands: Plants and Animalsamong California’s Oaks (Heyday\, 2014).  She lives in a yurt near Ukiah surrounded by six kinds of oak and abundant wildlife. When she is not giving talks\, guiding walks\, or observing nature\, she swims\, sings\, and advocates for the preservation of native plants and insects. katemarianchild.com
