Don’t forget to compost!

Don’t forget to compost!

Our friends on the Sustainability Commission remind us to help fight climate change by putting all food scraps in the green bin along with yard waste. Bay Cities Refuse takes this organic material and then returns it to the community as rich compost for our gardens. Find the finished compost pile just east of the tennis courts in the MLK parking lot.

Mix finished compost into your garden soil to replenish nutrients and help retain moisture, vital during these dry times. You can also spread compost in a thick layer on top of exposed soil (always leaving a few inches wide open around the stem or tree trunk). Worms and other creatures will help the compost integrate with the soil below. Top dressing or mulching is not only an easy way to apply compost but also keeps down weeds and helps your soil retain moisture.

We are also grateful to the Sustainability Commission for helping businesses reduce and eliminate single-use plastics that cannot be recycled or composted. This cuts down on the litter around town, and keeps our parks cleaner. Thank you to all the volunteer Commissioners for their efforts!
