After two years of planning, negotiating, and fundraising, the “Marin City-Sausalito Tunnel Art Project: All Our Children United” is now complete! This public art project runs along the walkway under highway 101 to symbolize the connection between two historic Marin County communities and celebrates the unification of our public schools.
The community celebrated the completion of this long-awaited project on Saturday, November 19th with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Approximately 200 community members from both Sausalito and Marin City met on either side of the tunnel and walked in together to watch the ribbon-cutting accompanied by a New-Orleans style musical parade.
Designed by local artist Raylene Gorum, the 200-foot brightly colored mural features stencils of simulated children’s handprints on a background evoking sunrise to sunset. Along with improved tunnel lighting, the mural will enliven the tunnel walkway that school children and other walkers and cyclists use every day.
Sausalito Beautiful was instrumental in getting this project off the ground by serving on the five-person Steering Committee, offering the initial grant to fund its design, and adding additional funds as it developed. The art project required two years of planning and negotiations with the County and Caltrans and raising the necessary funds before it could come to fruition.
