Hello and Happy Spring to all of Sausalito Beautiful’s friends and advocates.
While we are patiently awaiting respite from the seemingly omnipresent wind and rain, please know that we have been busy queuing up some exciting projects for this year. At the top of this list we have continued to work with the City to plant more trees along Caledonia Street and this should be getting underway shortly.
Over the past few years Sausalito Beautiful and the City have collaborated to introduce trees to both the south and north ends of Caledonia, and we are now focusing our efforts to the “tree-needy” middle block with our initial target being the section between Locust and Litho Streets. Due to the preponderance of underground utilities along the east side of the street the new trees will occupy the western edge. In the meantime, we are exploring methods to introduce plantings along the east side in a less-invasive manner that will allow for greenery without imposing challenges on the utilities.
In addition to Caledonia Street, Sausalito Beautiful continues its focus on the trees and plantings in other public places. As we are all aware, we have lost many branches and trees in the recent storm cycles and that is a cause for concern as we rely on much of Sausalito’s tree canopy to contribute to our community’s resilience during and after these storms. If you haven’t already, please read the article by Sausalito Beautiful Board member Sharna Brockett for an informative summary on the many ways trees benefit our neighborhoods especially when it comes to managing stormwater.
For an update on what we’re doing with the trees we planted at MLK park, please look no further than this article from another Board member, Lise Ciolino (rhymes with Pisa) about the great success we achieved with Jim Scriba and our crack team of Green Thumbs volunteers in planting new trees at MLK Park. The recent installation of a commemorative plaque acknowledges the leaders and supporters responsible for bringing this important project to fruition.
Finally, Sausalito Beautiful has set its sights on improvements to Yee Tock Chee Park at the base of Princess Street. This historic public space on the Bay is the former landing site of the ferry boat “Princess” and was dedicated in 1977 for well-regarded Sausalito grocer Willie Yee, owner of the Marin Fruit Company.
As for upcoming events please check our calendar for Green Thumbs projects including the mulching of trees on Johnson Street and at MLK Park as many hands make these efforts more enjoyable for all. Stay tuned, as other exciting events are on the horizon.
Thank you for all you do to help keep Sausalito Beautiful.
Sincerely,
